WordPress or a Custom Website for a Hotel or Riad? The Honest Guide

WordPress is enough for some Moroccan hotels and riads, not others. When to choose WordPress or custom: costs, speed, security, direct booking.

WordPress is enough for a small riad that wants a showcase with photos, rates and a WhatsApp button; a custom site is better once you want to take bookings and payments directly, sell in several languages, or need more speed and security. The question is not which is better, but what the site must do for your business.

When WordPress is enough

Choose WordPress if your budget is tight (2,000 to 8,000 MAD), the site is a showcase with no payments, you or someone close can handle updates, and your guests mostly come from platforms and Google Maps. A four-room riad that takes enquiries by WhatsApp does not need more. To be clear: a well-configured WordPress site beats a badly built custom one.

When custom becomes better

  • Direct booking and payment: a booking engine with CMI, deposits and live availability, without stacking five plugins. See direct booking websites for riads.
  • Speed: a riad page with a heavy gallery must load fast on mobile; custom code ships only what is needed.
  • Security: fewer third-party plugins, fewer holes to watch (how Moroccan websites get hacked).
  • Several languages and SEO: clean EN/FR/NL structure, hreflang, Hotel schema, controlled URLs.
  • Ownership: the code and repository are yours.

The cost comparison

WordPress: 2,000 to 8,000 MAD from a freelancer, 8,000 to 25,000 MAD from an agency, plus paid plugins (500 to 2,000 MAD a year each), maintenance and better hosting. Custom: our tourism packages start at 6,500 MAD (showcase), 9,900 MAD (several offers and languages) and 12,000 MAD and up (booking, dashboard, payment). Over three years the gap often narrows sharply: see the hidden cost of free WordPress and what a website costs in Morocco.

Decide in three questions

1. Do you want to take bookings and payments online? If yes, custom. 2. Do your guests come from Europe, on mobile, in several languages? If yes, custom. 3. Budget under 8,000 MAD and a simple showcase? WordPress works. For the technical detail: Next.js vs WordPress.
