Shared Hosting vs AWS: Why a VPS Is the Middle Ground

Shared hosting, VPS or AWS for a Moroccan business website? What each one costs, how fast and secure it is, and why a VPS is often the right middle ground.

A VPS (virtual private server) is the middle ground between shared hosting and AWS: you get dedicated resources and full control for a fraction of what a managed AWS setup costs, without sharing a server with hundreds of strangers. Shared hosting suits a simple brochure site, AWS suits complex or fast-growing platforms, and a VPS suits the large group of business sites in between.

Shared hosting: cheap, but shared

Your site sits on a server with hundreds of others and shares CPU, RAM and bandwidth. It is cheap, usually 800 to 1,500 MAD a year once promotional pricing ends, and fine for a small WordPress site with modest traffic. The limits: a neighbour's traffic spike can slow you down, you cannot install custom software, and there is no upgrade path beyond migrating.

AWS: powerful, but it needs an engineer

AWS gives you virtual servers, databases, CDN and auto-scaling, billed by use. A managed deployment such as Amplify costs roughly 50 to 200 MAD a month for a small site, and a fuller setup with databases and a CDN 500 to 3,000 MAD a month. It is the right answer for e-commerce at scale and traffic spikes, but someone must configure and monitor it, and bills can drift without oversight. Our Hostinger vs AWS comparison covers it in depth.

VPS: your own server, a fixed price

A VPS is a slice of a physical server reserved for you: guaranteed CPU and memory, root access, your own firewall and a predictable monthly bill, typically a few hundred MAD a month rather than a few thousand. You can run a Next.js or Node application, a database and background jobs on it, put Cloudflare in front for caching, and add RAM when needed. The trade-off is that someone has to maintain it: updates, backups, monitoring. That is exactly what a developer or agency does for you.

Which one should you choose?

  • Shared hosting: brochure WordPress site, under about 10,000 visits a month, minimal budget.
  • VPS: custom site or application, booking or payment flow, steady traffic, you want speed and control at a fixed cost.
  • AWS: unpredictable traffic, many services, strict uptime, or a team that runs infrastructure.

Where the server is located also matters for Moroccan visitors: see hosting latency from Morocco to Europe and the USA. And if you are choosing a developer, ask where and how they host your site. The full cost picture is in what a website costs in Morocco in 2026.
