Local SEO in Morocco: how to rank at the top of Google Maps and local search

Google Business Profile, local citations, reviews: the complete method for dominating local search in Morocco and capturing customers searching near them.

By Sentinel Studio·May 14, 2026·9 min read

When someone in Casablanca searches "marketing agency Casablanca" or "plumber Maarif" on Google, the three results in the map block capture the overwhelming majority of clicks. Your site can be perfectly built — if it does not appear in that block, you are invisible for high-purchase-intent local searches.

Local SEO is a subset of organic search with its own rules. Here is how to work it methodically.

Why local SEO differs from standard SEO

Standard SEO optimizes for broad queries: "web agency Morocco," "accounting training," "wedding dress." Local SEO targets queries with explicit or implied geographic intent: "web agency Casablanca," "hairdresser near me," "restaurant Guéliz Marrakech."

Google handles these two query types differently. For local searches, it displays a "Local Pack" — the block with the map and three business listings — before organic results. That block is fed primarily by Google Business Profile, not by your website.

The direct consequence: a business with a well-optimized Google Business Profile and limited web presence can outrank a business with an excellent site but a neglected profile. The two levers are complementary — but the Local Pack has its own rules.

Your Google Business Profile: 7 non-negotiable points

1. Exact primary category. This is the strongest signal to Google. "Web development agency" and "Web design company" are not equivalent in the algorithm. Choose the category that precisely matches your main activity, then add secondary categories for supporting services.

2. Identical NAP everywhere. Your business name, address, and phone number must be exactly identical on your Google listing, your website, your Facebook page, and every directory where you are listed. A variation — "Rue Hassan II" here, "R. Hassan II" there — weakens your local consistency signal to Google.

3. Description with local keywords. Your description should naturally mention your city, your neighborhood if relevant, and your main services. 750 characters maximum: be specific, not generic.

4. Recent, quality photos. Profiles with photos receive 42% more direction requests according to Google. Minimum: exterior photo, interior photos, team photo. For a restaurant or hotel, photos are decisive.

5. Complete and current opening hours. Incorrect hours generate frustration and negative reviews. Update special hours for Ramadan, national holidays, and exceptional closures.

6. Services and products listed. Google lets you list your services directly on your profile. Each listed service is an opportunity to rank for a specific query. Not using this section means leaving positions on the table.

7. Q&A completed by you. The Q&A section is public. If you do not fill it in, customers ask questions that anyone can answer. Anticipate frequent questions and answer them yourself with accurate information.

Local signals on your website

Your website reinforces your Google Business Profile — the two systems feed each other. To send strong local signals from your site:

Contact page with structured address. Use Schema.org LocalBusiness markup on your contact page. Include your full address, your Moroccan phone number (in +212 format), and an embedded Google Map.

Natural geographic mentions in content. If you serve Casablanca, Rabat, and Tangier, your content should mention this naturally — not by keyword-stuffing city names, but by answering the questions your local customers actually have: delivery timelines to Marrakech, on-site visits in Agadir, regional specifics of your sector.

Dedicated location pages if you operate in multiple cities. A "Web development in Rabat" page distinct from a "Web development in Casablanca" page captures local queries that your homepage cannot target alone. See our approach for Marrakech as an example.

Local citations in Morocco: where to list

A local citation is any mention of your NAP (name, address, phone) on a third-party site. The more consistent citations you have on reliable sources, the more Google trusts your geographic anchor.

Absolute priority: Maroc Annuaire, Yabiladi Business, Pages Jaunes Maroc (pagesjaunes.ma), and sector-specific directories in your industry. For B2B businesses, LinkedIn Company Page and Moroccan professional associations (CGEM, sector federations) are high-authority citations.

Do this systematically: verify that your NAP is identical on each listing. An inconsistency on 20% of your citations dilutes the effect of all of them.

Customer reviews: the variable that makes the difference

The number and quality of Google reviews is the most directly actionable local ranking factor in the short term. A profile with 50 reviews at 4.6 stars almost always outranks a profile with 8 reviews at 4.9 stars in the Local Pack.

The most effective method: send a direct link to your Google review page (generatable from your Google Business dashboard) to every satisfied customer immediately after project completion. Timing matters — asking for a review two weeks after a finished project yields a response rate three times lower.

Respond to all reviews — positive and negative. A professional response to a negative review often converts better than a string of perfect reviews with no responses, because it shows the business is active and accountable.

The reality of local SEO in Morocco in 2026

Local SEO competition varies enormously by city and sector. For queries like "web agency Casablanca," competition is real and results require 3 to 6 months of consistent work. For "web agency Beni Mellal" or "HR consultant Oujda," a well-optimized profile and a few citations often dominate the Local Pack quickly.

Local SEO is sustained work, not a one-time intervention. Signals accumulate over time: reviews, citations, local content, profile activity. Starting today with a method beats waiting for the perfect moment.

If your current site is not sending the right local signals — structure, Schema markup, geo-targeted pages — we audit it and fix it. A well-executed local SEO overhaul changes organic traffic numbers within months.
